Input–Output tables for nine Southeast Asian countries for the period from 2000 to 2022 are analyzed to identify patterns in electricity demand. A methodology for estimating final electricity demand, eliminating double-counting using Input–Output tables, is proposed. It is found that 80% of the growth in electricity demand in this sample of countries over this period is due to increased energy consumption in China. Structural changes in electricity consumption are primarily explained by changes in the sectoral structure of the economy. As per capita income increases, the contribution of agriculture and textile production to total electricity consumption decreases, while that of knowledge-intensive industry and the service sector increases. Electricity consumption in industry and construction, on the one hand, and household consumption, on the other, are competing sectors. A direct proportional relationship is established between the growth of GDP per capita and the increase in electricity consumption per capita.
