dc.description.abstractBased on documents from official bodies of the Belarusian-Lithuanian provinces of the first half of the 19th century, which are stored in the funds of the National Historical Archives of Belarus, cases of suicide among serfs were analyzed. The article shows the mechanism of conducting investigations and making judicial decisions using specific examples. It also shows the main reasons (fear of punishment, reaction to cruel treatment, poverty) that pushed serfs to commit suicide.en
